Building website pages in WordPress designed by team members Alexa Policicchio and Jonathan Biron.
ShowGBC is a website that showcases the work of students from the Centre for Arts, Design and Information Technology's Year End Show at George Brown College. The website aims to highlight the diverse talent from the Dance, Design, Fashion, Jewellery, Information Technology, Media and Theatre programs.
Prior to my addition on this project, the website had been worked on by multiple design students. The website had several issues with the global navigation, layouts with too much negative space and overall consistency. I gathered recommendations for the new redesign as well as examples of repetition or unclear content within the site.
Before transitioning the ShowGBC WordPress website to a new theme, I made a site map to lay out the existing content. This gave an overview of the levels of navigation as well as the type of content. On the next slide, you will see the new site map that shows consistency across the main levels of navigation.
The previous website design had unaligned content sections, creating an unorganized layout. With the new website, the content sections are aligned and stacked for responsiveness on tablet and mobile views.
The old page layout contained more negative space than content. In order to maximize on the screen space, the content width was increased, leaving a bit of margin space on the left and right.
Using the WordPress theme, elements such as an accordion was implemented to minimize scroll length while keeping mandatory content accessible. A 'scroll to' feature was added for pages listing multiple students. This allows visitors of the website to press on a student name which scrolls directly to that student's section.
